What is Black Mold and how dangerous is it really?

Black mold. Just hearing the phrase is enough to make homeowners nervous—and for good reason.

This toxic fungus doesn’t just smell bad or look gross, it can seriously impact your health and your home if left untreated.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • What black mold actually is
  • How it affects your health
  • What to do if you think it’s in your space

What is black mold?

The term “Black mold” can be misleading since many mold types can be dark or black in appearance.

“Black mold” or “toxic mold” is typically either Chaetomium or Stachybotrys Chartarum, a dark green or black fungus that thrives in moist, poorly ventilated areas—like bathrooms, basements, crawl spaces, and behind walls after water damage.

Unlike dirt or mildew, black mold can release mycotoxins—toxic compounds that contaminate your air and affect your health.

Mold spreads by releasing microscopic spores, which float through the air and settle on damp surfaces, forming new colonies and worsening indoor air quality.

Note: All mold can be harmful at high enough levels, triggering allergic reactions and other health issues. But the real concern comes from certain types that produce toxins known as mycotoxins.

The most notorious is Stachybotrys, but other dangerous molds include Aspergillus, Penicillium, Chaetomium, Trichoderma, Phoma, and Fusarium. These molds have been linked to serious health risks, making it crucial to identify and address them as soon as possible.

Is black mold dangerous?

It can be, yes, especially with prolonged exposure.

Some people are more sensitive than others, but common symptoms of exposure include:

  • Respiratory issues: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath
  • Allergic reactions: sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes
  • Skin irritation: rashes or hives
  • Neurological symptoms: headaches, brain fog, fatigue, mood swings, even memory loss

People with asthma, weakened immune systems, or mold allergies are especially at risk (CDC). (Learn more about Common Symptoms of Mold Exposure.)

Important: In severe cases, long-term exposure has been linked to chronic respiratory illness and neurological damage. Don’t ignore it.

What should I do if I find black mold?

If you:

  • Smell a musty/moldy odor
  • See dark spots in damp areas
  • Feel sick without a clear cause

…it’s best to take action.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Don’t touch or disturb it. Scrubbing can release more spores into the air.
  2. Ventilate the area if safe. But avoid using fans that might spread spores.
  3. Call a professional for inspection and remediation.

At Pure Maintenance Nebraska, we offer a variety of air and surface testing methods backed by unbiased certified 3rd-party labs to determine if unhealthy mold conditions exist. If mold treatment is necessary, we can apply our powerful whole home treatment process to eliminate mold quickly and completely—with little to no demolition.

Final Thought

If you suspect black mold, don’t wait. The longer it sits, the worse it gets—for your home and your health. And unfortunately, mold doesn’t resolve itself. At best, mold spores can go dormant until moisture levels become elevated again.
